Hot weather has arrived in Niagara, with an Environment Canada Heat Warning in effect, and the high temperatures are expected to persist for at least a week.
To help residents escape the extreme heat, a number of municipalities in the Niagara Region are giving you ways to stay cool.
City of Niagara Falls has activated a number of indoor and outdoor cooling stations. There are cooling stations at City Hall, Gale Centre, MacBain Community Centre, Niagara Falls History Museum and Niagara Falls Public Library branches. Additionally, splash pads in Niagara Falls will be open daily from 10:30am to 7:30pm, while outdoor pools will open on Friday. The FH Leslie Pool opens Saturday.
City of St. Catharines has extended its splash pad hours to run until 9:00pm now in response to the heat warning, while a number of city facilities including the Kiwanis Aquatics Centre, the Museum and library branches can also be used to cool down during extreme weather.
City of Welland splashpads are typically open from 8:00am to 8:00pm, except during heat alerts, when the closing time is extended by an hour to 9:00pm.
The Town of Fort Erie has three spray pads open now for use, including at Bertie Centennial Park, Crystal Ridge Park and Stevensville Memorial Park. A multi-use water feature is also available at the Ridgeway Village Square to stay cool.
In the City of Port Colborne, residents can enjoy H.H Knoll Lakeview Park, which offers the Discovery Spray Pad.
Town of Pelham’s public pool is open on weekdays from 5:00pm to 5:00pm, and on weekends from 1:00pm to 8:00pm. There’s also two splash pads in Pelham that are open until dusk at Centennial Park and Marlene Stewart Streit Park.
Niagara-on-the-Lake offers a splash pad at Centennial Sports Park on Four Mile Creek Road. The splash pad opened for the season on June 1st, while the park is accessible from 9:00am to 9:00pm.
Three parks in the Town of Lincoln offer splash pads daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm. These can be found at Jordan Lions Park, Angelina Marci Prokich Park, and Hilary Bald Park.
West Lincoln has just one splash pad, located at the West Lincoln Community Park. During the summer, it’s open from 9:00am to 8:00pm.
The Town of Grimsby has opened up some municipal facilities as cooling centres during this heat warning. Residents can cool down at the Grimsby Museum, Livingston Activity Centre and Grimsby Public Library. There’s also two splash pads, at the Peach King Centre and Lions Park, that are open from 9:00am to 9:00pm.
City of Thorold has six splash pads for residents to use daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm. These can be found at McAdam Park, McMillan Park, Port Robinson Park, South Confederation Park and Sullivan Park. The splash pads at the Thorold Community Pool will be available starting June 22nd.
