As the Paris 2024 Olympics begin this week, excitement is building over the fact that for the first time, half of the athletes will be women, totaling 5,250 each.
While this milestone is significant, Michele Donnelly, an Associate Professor of Sport Management at Brock University, cautions against overstating it.
She emphasizes that gender parity-having equal numbers of men and women-is not the same as gender equality, which encompasses rights, responsibilities, and opportunities.
She adds that achieving full gender equality at the Olympics should be a priority.
