A large police presence in St. Catharines yesterday now has the province’s police watchdog involved.
Yesterday around noon, Niagara Regional Police were called to the area of Bunting Road and Dunkirk Road, with reports of a heavy police presence in the area.
Niagara Regional Police later announced that the investigation has since been take over by the Special Investigations Unit. There’s been no word on any arrests or charges in connection to the incident.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians.
