Each year on April 2nd, communities, businesses, schools and non-profit organizations recognize World Autism Awareness Day, a day sanctioned by United Nations General Assembly and celebrated across the globe.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is defined as a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people and the world around them. It can affect body language and posture, social interactions and relationships, how you engage with your interests, and sensory processing capacities. Approximately 1-2% of the Canadian population is on the Autism Spectrum. At Bethesda, it is a day intended to increase understanding and acceptance of those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, foster local support and awareness, and share stories of inspiration and success.
For the first time, Bethesda has brought the community together to wear blue in recognition of the day and promote their participation online in a Wear and Share campaign. Bethesda staff and many Niagara businesses will don their World Autism Awareness Day shirts on Friday, March 31. Niagara Falls will illuminate blue at 10pm on Sunday, April 2nd, Brock’s Schmon Tower will light up blue and Thorold City Hall will also turn blue over the weekend of March 31-April 2nd. Bethesda invites the community to come together, wear blue and share your photo with the hashtag #WorldAutismDay and tag @Bethesda.Niagara in your Facebook and Instagram posts for the 1 in 66 Canadian children with ASD.
