US President Donald Trump is fighting back against a surcharge on Ontario energy to the USA.
Yesterday, Premier Doug Ford announced a 25% surcharge on energy going to the US until tariff threats from President Trump were halted. The surcharge will affect 1.5 million homes and businesses, costing up to $400,000 daily and $100 a month for Americans.
Trump has instead doubled down, saying that tariffs would be raised to 50% on Canadian steel and aluminum as a result. He also noted in a TruthSocial post that he would be declaring a National Emergency on electricity for the areas that are reliant on energy from Canada.
Trump also said another substantial increase on cars coming to the US from Canada would be coming in early April.
